| After a while, the castaways realized that they couldn't keep going the way they were forever.
If they had to work all day every day just to survive, what would happen if some of them got sick, or some natural
disaster hit them? They decided that they would have to start putting extra time into building infrastructure.
And so, for the next few months, they worked even harder than they used to, and they spent the extra time working
on things that would make their lives easier in the future. They improved their shelters so they would be stronger and require less maintainence. They planted seeds and cultivated vegetable gardens, so they wouldn't have to spend so much time finding food. They made nets so they could catch more fish. They succeeded in digging a well, so they no longer had to make a long hike into the woods to find water to carry back to their camp. And they figured out a way to store dried fish and fruit so they could save up food for future emergencies. For a few months, they worked so hard they weren't sure they were going to survive that, but in the end it paid off. Once some infrastructure was built up, life became much, much easier. They each only had to work about half the day now to survive, and if some catastrophe hit them, they would have some margin for survival. |
