| Being on the bottom end! According to the Census Bureau, 12 percent of the population lives in poverty right now. One out of every eight people. (One out of every five
children!) That alone should be enough
to answer the question entirely. (Or this. Or this.) It distorts democracy. When parts of your society have the money to amplify their political voices tremendously, while other parts spend all their energy just to survive, your decisions are going to be unduly influened by the monied minority, and following human nature, they are likely to steer the country in directions that mostly benefit them and not their less fortunate fellow citizens. It probably leads to us needing higher taxes! This would be an interesting argument to run by an anti-tax conservative. The idea is that taxation is necessary in part to help even out the disparities in wealth. If wealth were more evenly distributed, the overall tax rates maybe could be lower. In this way, the middle class is likely being forced to pay doubly for the greed of the super rich. |
